So as many of my friends already know, Mat & I have been changing a lot about what we use in our kitchen & in our home over the past year. We've always been "cheap", we've always tried to be "healthy" & we've usually attempted to be "nice" to the good green Earth that God gave us.
However, over the past year we've been pushed to go further with these things: to be better stewards of the money God's given us, to treat our bodies as the 'very good' creations God made them to be, & to subdue the Earth as good & wise managers of it as God commanded us.
And a lot of people out there have taken quite the interest in all this - some negative, but the majority have been positive & curious. Therefore, for those who would like to join in some small way into what we are doing, I'm going to post all the recipes I've collected for a cheaper &/or greener home & diet. I'll also give you a little note as to why this recipe is better than going the so-called 'convenient' route of just buying it at Wal-Mart.
I'd also like to note a HUGE thanks to our friend & doula, Sarah Stanford-Stogryn, who really helped us get on our feet with all this. Without her knowledge, & wisdom we'd be lost.

To begin I'll give you multiple posts on household & personal health recipes.
Then I'll give multiple posts on health recipes for your kitchen.

Directions: Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl. Mash it together with the back of a spoon. Scoop into a small glass container for storage.

Notes: Good for a long time, this size of batch should last about 2/3 months
Whys & Whats:
The main thing about this recipe is that there is no fluoride. Fluoride is a by-product of copper, iron & aluminum manufacturing. The problem of how to legally dispose of fluoride was solved in the 1930's when a study (funded by one of the country's largest aluminum companies) concluded that fluoride prevented tooth decay.
But does that make it safe or good to use?
The ingredients in this recipe not only prevent cavities, tooth decay, & strengthen teeth, but they come from natural sources & do not pollute the environment or the body.

Our Assessment:
This recipe does not yield a paste, more of a pastey powder that took some adjusting since we were so used to the foaming feeling of the other stuff. However, we've noticed we have less morning breath, & our teeth still feel clean though there isn't a 'strong' minty taste leftover after brushing. (If you miss this strong minty taste, I just suggest using a natural mouthwash)
All in all, we won't dare go back to regular toothpaste...& the odd time we have had to use Crest or Colgate, its been weird & we miss our stuff.
Also, the cost, is not significantly cheaper when you only buy your toothpaste on sale & in bulk, like we did. However, it works out to roughly the same & once your invest in the ingredients initially, you are set for toothpaste for a year (maybe more) depending on your household size & how much you use each time you brush.
